Fake UPI Payment Screenshot Kaise Pehchane

Here’s how to identify fake UPI payment before you pack the parcel: ignore the screenshot and open your own bank or UPI app. Look for the credit with the exact amount, the payer’s name and a UTR or reference number. If that money isn’t credited in your transaction history, you haven’t been paid, however real the picture looks.

It’s 8:40 on a Saturday night at your saree shop in Varanasi. (A typical example, not a real shop, though you’ll probably recognise it.) Two walk-in customers wait at the counter. Your nephew is taping parcels in the back. Your phone won’t stop buzzing.

A customer in Pune has picked a Banarasi silk on Instagram for ₹4,200. She sends a WhatsApp screenshot: green tick, “Payment successful”, a long reference number. You glance at it between two customers, say “theek hai”, and the parcel leaves with the morning courier.

On Tuesday you check your bank statement. No ₹4,200. Maybe the screenshot was edited. Maybe it came from an old payment, or the payment failed on her side and she sent the screen anyway. It hardly matters now. The saree is already in Pune.

Is the fake UPI payment screenshot scam real?

Yes. It keeps turning up in the news.

In September 2026, The Hindu reported that small merchants in Kerala were being hit with fake UPI payment confirmation screens. In Muvattupuzha, a buyer showed payment screens on his phone and took two silver shops for ₹16,000 and ₹6,000. Cyber police, the report says, have repeatedly told traders not to rely only on screenshots, because they can be edited or made with fake apps: The Hindu report.

In Delhi, police said in August 2026 that they had broken up a racket where the accused showed shopkeepers fake or edited payment screenshots during small, routine purchases. In one case a cloth shop owner found no money in his account. The accused then took his phone “to check the problem” and made an unauthorised transfer of ₹1 lakh: The Tribune report.

Both cases happened face to face, at the counter, and scammers still got through. Online sellers don’t even get that. On Instagram and WhatsApp you never see the buyer at all.

Why is it worse when you sell on Instagram and WhatsApp?

At the counter you can at least watch the customer and wait for the soundbox to speak. Online, the odds tilt against you.

  • The screenshot lands in the middle of forty other messages.
  • You pack at night and check the bank next morning, after the parcel has gone.
  • Customers split payments: “₹2,000 now, rest tomorrow.”
  • The courier pickup time pushes you to dispatch before you’ve checked.

Not every bad screenshot is fraud, either. Plenty are just unclear: a payment still showing “pending”, a cropped image with no reference number, money sent to your old UPI ID, a debit on the customer’s side that never reached you. The customer may be completely honest. You still end up shipping on trust. If the customer really paid but nothing reached your account, our guide on UPI payment not received by merchant explains what to check next.

What are the warning signs of a fake payment screenshot?

A few warning signs are worth knowing. None of them proves anything on its own.

  • The UTR or reference number is missing, cut off or shorter than usual.
  • The time on the screen doesn’t match when the customer said they paid.
  • The receiver name or UPI ID isn’t exactly yours.
  • The status says pending or processing, not completed.
  • The image is cropped so the amount or date is hard to read.
  • The customer is rushing you: “courier is waiting”, “please send today only”.

Now the uncomfortable part. A good fake shows none of these signs. That’s why looking at the picture is never the real check.

How to identify fake UPI payment and verify it before you ship

Keep one rule in your head. A screenshot is the customer’s claim. Proof of payment is money in your own account. Then verify the payment in this order.

  1. Open your own bank or UPI app yourself. Don’t tap any link, app or number the customer sends. Find the credit with the right amount, time and payer in your transaction history.
  2. Match the exact amount. If two customers paid ₹1,499 on the same evening, match the UTR or transaction ID too.
  3. Turn on alerts for every transaction. Among its safety tips, NPCI asks people to switch on SMS alerts and app notifications, to review them and not to rush when someone pressures them to act fast: CNBC-TV18 report.
  4. Never hand over your phone, UPI PIN or OTP. You don’t need a PIN to receive money. The Delhi case above began with a fake screenshot and ended with ₹1 lakh gone.
  5. Give your staff one rule. No credit seen, no dispatch. Write it on the packing table if you have to.
  6. If you’ve been cheated, act the same day. Save the chat, the screenshot, the number and the UPI ID. Call your bank, call the cybercrime helpline 1930 and file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Why does checking by hand break down when orders grow?

Checking ten orders a day by hand is fine. Checking forty in Diwali week is a different job. Get ready for the rush with these Diwali sale ideas for online orders.

Someone has to match every amount in the bank app to every chat, often on a family member’s phone, often late at night. The check happens after the rush, when mistakes come easiest. Miss one match and you either ship without payment or ring an honest customer to ask if she really paid. Nobody enjoys that call.

Payment proof you can’t trust is one of three places where a shop selling on WhatsApp and Instagram quietly loses money. The other two are orders lost in chats, which our guide to WhatsApp order management for small shops covers, and counter bills kept apart from online orders. This post deals with the first.

How does a checkout that confirms payment remove the problem?

Take the screenshot out of the process altogether.

When a customer pays on a proper checkout page, the payment is confirmed at checkout, as it happens, and only then is the order recorded as paid. You don’t get a picture of a payment. You see an order marked paid in your own order list.

No picture means nothing to edit and nothing to crop. It also means no awkward calls asking a customer to prove she paid. A checkout like this does carry a fee, and our post on payment gateway charges in India breaks down what shops usually pay.

How does Indi Andaz handle payment proof for a small shop?

Indi Andaz gives your shop a branded online store with a link like indiandaz.com/sellers/yourshopname. You put that link in your Instagram bio and send it in chats instead of your UPI ID. Cash on delivery has its own risks, covered in COD vs prepaid.

  • The customer pays at checkout. UPI, card or cash on delivery. For UPI and card, payment is confirmed at checkout, so the order reaches you already marked paid.
  • You see every order in one place. The Seller Portal on the web and the Partner app on Android (com.indiandaz.partner) show each order with its payment status.
  • Delivery goes through Delhivery. Shipping is charged separately.
  • Pricing: no monthly fee, 5% only on delivered online orders, payment processing included. GST applies on the fee. On a ₹1,000 product the fee is ₹50, and you don’t pay a separate payment gateway fee for UPI or card orders.

At the counter, the Counter app handles GST billing, so counter bills and online orders sit in one app. Counter stock and online stock are kept separate today. Hindi me padhna ho to dukan me online payment kaise kare dekhiye.

What won’t a confirmed checkout fix?

Know the limits before you lean on it.

  • Cash on delivery is still cash on delivery. Nothing is confirmed until the buyer accepts the parcel, and COD refusals still happen. The 5% applies only to delivered orders, but shipping is charged separately, so watch your refused parcels. Here’s how Indi Andaz works.
  • Some customers will still want to pay your personal UPI in chat. If you say yes, you’re back to checking your bank app by hand. Send the store link politely and tell them the order gets recorded properly that way.
  • The counter is a separate risk. A walk-in customer can still show you a fake screen. Check the credit on your own phone or soundbox before handing over goods, even when the customer scanned your QR code right in front of you.

FAQ: fake UPI payments

How to check UPI payment received before you ship?

Open your own bank or UPI app and find the credit with the right amount and payer in your transaction history. If two payments look alike, match the UTR. A genuine UPI transaction always shows up there. A screenshot from the customer is a claim, not proof.

Is there a fake payment screenshot checker?

No app can reliably tell a real screenshot from a good fake, so don’t trust any tool that promises to. The only check that works is your own bank or UPI app: open it yourself and look for the credit with the right amount, time and payer.

How do I file a fake UPI payment complaint?

Save the chat, screenshot, phone number and UPI ID. Call your bank and the 1930 helpline, then file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it the same day. Recovery isn’t guaranteed, so move fast.

Is UPI payment chargeable now for shops?

Under the framework announced on 15 Sep 2026 (NPCI said on 13 October that it starts after Diwali, on a date NPCI notifies; see our UPI MDR post), UPI payments to a merchant above ₹2,000 will carry 0.4% MDR, capped at ₹300 per transaction (the cap applies at ₹75,000 and above), paid by the merchant. Payments of ₹2,000 or less, person-to-person transfers and small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month through UPI QR stay at zero MDR (PIB and Department of Financial Services, 15 Sep 2026). On Indi Andaz, the 5% on delivered online orders includes payment processing.
